Defensive cycling?

You all know I’m a big believer in making conditions safer for cyclists through a variety of measures that include safer facilities, education, law enforcement and prosecution to ensure safer driving by motorists.

The fact remains, however, that the only behavior you can control is your own. Defensive driving, which is driving to anticipate the actions of others, applies as much to cycling as it does to driving. Opening a door in traffic is illegal in 40 states and the District of Columbia, for example, but it happens so commonly that we have a name for it when a cyclist is hit by a suddenly open door. Ditto for other common collision scenarios such as The Right Hook and The Left Cross. We can watch for all of these and react accordingly when somebody does the inevitable as a fallible human being.

Very occasionally, you can do everything right and still fall afoul of bad driving. 23 year old Shayla Cypriano was walking her bicycle across the street in San Jose last Thursday when a collision claimed her life. A southbound dump truck on Lincoln was in the light-controlled intersection at Auzerais when a delivery truck on Auzerais struck it and knock it over, directly onto Ms Cypriano. The speed limit on both streets is 25 MPH.

Ms Cypriano leaves behind a toddler. You can read more about her here. She was San Jose’s 17th pedestrian fatality for 2013. Number 16 was a cyclist who ran the railroad crossing gate and was struck by a VTA light rail train near Sunol Street.

Bay Area Bike Share Bike Design

“Exactly colors to be determined” like it says in this diagram, but here’s what our Bay Area Bike Share bikes will look like.

Bay Area Bike Share

This bike with a step through frame features 7 speeds, front and rear lights powered by a front hub dynamo, drum brakes, fenders, skirt guard, chain guard, and a small front rack.

The bike share will be operated by Alta Bike Share, with kiosks in San Francisco, Redwood City, Palo Alto, Mountain View and San Jose, with operation planned beginning in August (but we’ve been hearing “SF Bike Share coming Real Soon Now!” since 2010, so don’t hold your breath).

San Jose : Willow Glen Trestle Tour tomorrow

Join trail advocates on a tour of a railroad trestle bridge on the alignment of the planned Three Creeks Trail

The Los Gatos Creek trail from Lexington Reservoir to San Jose is an important corridor for recreation and human-powered transportation, providing complete grade separation through the cities of Los Gatos, Campbell and San Jose with easy crossings past a number of high traffic roads.

This trail ends on Meridian Avenue in San Jose’s Willow Glen neighborhood, about two miles short of downtown San Jose. Just blocks downstream of this trail end, the Los Gatos Creek intersects with the planned Three Creeks Trail, which mostly runs along the alignment of an abandoned Union Pacific rail right-of-way. Trail advocates in Willow Glen envision a regional, unified trail system linking Los Gatos Creek, Three Creeks, and the Guadalupe River System for enhanced biking and walking opportunities. A bridge where Three Creeks cross the Los Gatos Creek trail is a vital part of this conenction. Although city officials plan to replace the wooden rail trestle with a steel pedestrian structure, community advocates say this historic trestle bridge can be converted for trail use.

Bay Area transit on Memorial Day Holiday

BART @ Powell Street

A selection of Bay Area transit service notes for Memorial Day on May 27, 2013.

I’ve sampled the Google Transit schedules for Monday for a handful of these agencies and it appears Google correctly chooses the Memorial Day holiday schedule for VTA, AC Transit, BART, Capitol Corridor and Caltrain. If you test the other services I’m sure somebody would appreciate a note.

The infamous Oreik Et bicycle

I spotted the famous “Oreik Et” bicycle at San Jose Bike Party last Friday night.

San Jose Bike Party Safety Ride May 2013

Oreik Et is Te Kiero backwards. Te quiero is one way to say “I love you” in Spanish.

The owner of this bike is known for building crazy machines like this in his secret workshop somewhere in San Jose. iMinusD has a little more about the builder and his crazy bikes over at their blog. You can view my slideshow of the Bike Party “Safety Ride” here.
