Full sized folding fixed gear bike – Montague Boston

Montague announced a full sized folding fixed gear (or singlespeed) bike — the Montague Boston.

I thought the whole point of fixed gear bikes on the street was the ‘zen’ simplicity of these bikes, with style often another important consideration. Montague pretty clearly fails here, but according to Montague the Boston fills another requirement: that for bike storage in an urban environment.

“The idea for the Boston was conceived when examined how people use their bikes in an urban environment,” says product manager Jonathan Vandenberg. “We found that while the concept of a low maintenance, 700c, single speed was ideal for city riding, it clashed with the severe lack of space that most cities suffer. Let’s face it; it’s often hard to find secure outdoor parking for your bike, and who realistically has room in their studio apartment to accommodate a bike? The Boston’s standard full-size geometry allows you to ride comfortably all day long, and when you reach your destination, you can fold the bike down to take it inside.”

So what do you think? Fixed gear fail? A nice try? Or a great product that will do well?

More about the Montague Boston here.

Bike Friday has been doing fixed gear folding bikes for several years now, and they look really sharp IMO.

Update: Rycera built up a singlespeed full sized folder a while back.

Kids Bike In a Box

This is interesting: Online bicycle retailer Performance Bicycle announced “Kids Bike In a Box” along with a “Kids Bike Growth Guarantee” in what looks to me like shot at grabbing some of huge share of the kids bike market that mass retailers like Wal-Mart own.

The Bike In A Box program is just that — you pick a bike by consulting a sizing chart, order the bike, and a fully assembled bike in a box shows up on your doorstep.

Assembly is done by Performance bike workers, instead of the guy who stocks the lawn & garden department and scoops out the dead fish in the pet department, so hopefully you won’t have the nightmare stories of disconnected brakes and loose wheels that are typical of the mass retail bikes.

“Our new Kids Bike in a Box offering is designed to offer convenience and excellent value to Mom and Dad, especially during the holidays,” said Jim Thompson, chief executive of Performance Inc. “Bike in a Box is a new way for parents to choose the best bike at the best price, and make sure that it’s ready to ride as soon as it’s delivered, with the assurance that every bike is assembled for quality and safety.”

Performance’s Kids Bikes in a Box offers youth bikes for ages 3 to 12, professionally assembled and ready to ride. The bikes come in five different sizes: 12 inch, 16 inch and 20 inch for path and pavement bikes, and 20 inch and 24 inch for mountain bikes. The kids bikes also come in an assortment of colors for boys and girls. Prices for Performance’s youth bikes range from $89 to $220.

Mirror On Your Bike

Put a bell on your bike
Streamers go really swell on your bike
Panniers on a rack on your bike
Basket with a snack on your bike
Put some brakes on your bike
Reflective tape on your bike
Put some gears on your bike
“Not Hip” fears on your bike
Expensive camera pointed rear on your bike
Cause you don’t want a mirror on your bike

Mirror, on your bike, your bike
Mirror, on your bike, your bike
Put a mirror on your bike

See a car, in your mirror
See back really far, in your mirror
See that bus, in your mirror
Doesn’t take a lot of fuss, with a mirror
See a Silent NEV, in your mirror
Truck driver named “Kev”, in your mirror
You can see trees, in your mirror
See you gettin’ overtaken by me, in your mirror

Male models needed Interbike fashion show

I just got word from Momentum publisher Amy Walker that they’re still searching for male models for the Urban Legends fashion show next week in Vegas. She even suggested that I model, so I know they’re desperate. I’ve copied Amy’s note below — please retweet or send this along to some good candidates who will be in Vegas. Wouldn’t it be cool if somebody like Patrick Dempsey could show up for this?

Momentum Magazine is styling a bike fashion show at this year’s Interbike Trade show in Las Vegas.

We did a similar show last year and it was fun and a success. This year’s show will be held on the show floor and is an amazing opportunity to show real people wearing everyday clothing on bikes – illustrating the everyday cycling revolution that Momentum is so blessed to be a part of.

We need to find two men who are confident cyclists to model in the show.

If you are going to Interbike or you know someone who will be there and might be able to volunteer as a model in our show, we want to hear from you!

No previous modeling experience is required, but you would need to be comfortable being in the spotlight and with the speedy clothing changes required during the show (you will have a dresser)

We need the 2 male models to be reasonably fit and not too tall (under 6′ tall — many bikes are size medium)

Time required:
* Fitting Wednesday
* Rehearsal & show – Thursday 2pm – 6pm

Time is of the essence: We need to find these two models by Tuesday.

Please respond ASAP if you are able to model – or if you have a suggestion for a good candidate.

Thank you!

Momentum wants a full length photo, your height, shoe size, pant waist & length, and shirt size. Please respond to amy at momentum planet dot com.
