Santa Clara Expressways plan update

If you live in Silicon Valley and your New Year resolutions included a commitment to civic involvement, here’s your chance to be involved.

The Santa Clara County (CA) Roads Department is updating its long term plan for county expressways. A series of community meetings outlining the proposed plans begins tomorrow night in San Jose. If you can’t make that meeting, you’ll have four more opportunities through February 13, 2014.

Transportation directors named for NYC, Chicago

New transportation directors have been named for America’s largest city and America’s Second City.

Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio named Polly Trottenberg to replace Janette Sadik-Khan as New York City’s Transportation Commissioner. Trottenberg, who currently serves as Under Secretary for Policy at the U.S. Department of Transportation, said she is “committed to expanding the use of bikes.” Trottenberg says her mandate from de Blasio is to increase transit and bicycling for transportation and to reduce traffic fatalities. Transportation Alternatives describes her as a said she is“>demonstrated leader in progressive transportation. Bike Portland profiled Trottenberg’s role at US DOT in 2011.

In Chicago, Mayor Rahm Emmanuel announced the appointment of Rebekah Scheinfeld as Commissioner of the Chicago Department of Transportation. Scheinfeld replaces Gabe Klein, who resigned from the agency in November. Although she has promoted transit as her role of Chief Planning Officer at the Chicago Transit Authority, her views on cycling are unknown.

Regional transportation commission approves $5.3M for Santa Cruz coastal trail

This morning, the Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission (SCCRTC) allocated $5.3 million for the the Monterey Bay Sanctuary Scenic Trail (MBSST). The funds are designated for the Westside Santa Cruz segment between Natural Bridges and the Wharf ($4.06M), $1.04 million for the Lee Road segment in Watsonville, and $200K for the Twin Lakes Beachfront project.
