Holocaust survivor, PTA mom, city council member, and bike advocate: Ellen Fletcher succumbed yesterday at age 83 to lung cancer at her Palo Alto home.

The U.S. Census released their 2011 American Community Survey estimates on Wednesday, and San Francisco Peninsula bike advocate Andrew Boone found some surprising gains for the region.
During the well attended San Jose City Council meeting last night, the council voted unanimously to approve the Ocala Avenue / Hedding Street Bikeway plan with the amendments proposed by Councilmembers Sam Liccardo, Rose Herrera and Xavier Campos.
The Hedding Street and Ocala Avenue bikeways are on the agenda for Tuesday night’s City Council meeting in San Jose. While support remains for a proposed road diet on Hedding Street, heavy opposition to the street parking removal aspect has prompted some councilors to propose a compromise solution.
As part of the city of San Jose’s “Envision 2040” general plan and the 2020 Bike Plan, the city council directed the San Jose Department of Transportation to significantly expand the bikeway network to encourage more cycling as transportation.
DOT staff identified Hedding Street as an important east-west arterial that could be improved for cycling with minimal impact on existing traffic. Hedding is currently 60 feet wide between 17th Street in the east to 1st Street to the west, with four lanes carrying 16,500 vehicles per day.
