
Snow with icy and wet road conditions in the Lake Tahoe region have forced race organizers to delay the start first stage of the Amgen Tour of California.
It’s not a happy Monday.
I and many of you were following Stage 3 of the Giro d’Italia this morning when you saw Leopard Trek rider Wouter Weylandt crash out on the steep descent from Passo del Bocco. Weylandt succumbed to his injuries. π
Highway 1 landslide forces route change for Stage 5, which begins in Seaside, passes through Fort Ord and Laguna Seca to Carmel Valley, Greenfield, King City, past Lake Nacimiento to Paso Robles.
Due to closure of segments of California Highway 1, the route for May 19thβs Stage 5 of the 2011 Amgen Tour of California will be modified. Four recent rock and mudslides along Highway 1 have closed the coastal road, necessitating an inland route between Seaside and Paso Robles. The sixth-annual Amgen Tour of California, which will feature a world-class field of competitors, will take place from May 15 β 22.
The Colorado pro cycling stage race formerly known as the Quiznos Pro Challenge is now called “The USA Pro Cycling Challenge,” which seems about as unimaginative a name as you can have. They should at least have one of Rockies, Mountain, Colorado or even “Hell of the West” in the name of this race.
In addition to 3.5 hours per day of cable coverage on the Versus network, Race organizers also announced that NBC Sports will broadcast the final day of the race live on August 28. Paul Sherwen and Phil Liggett will announce.

Part of California Highway 1 in Big Sur collapsed south of Carmel-by-the-Sea near Rocky Creek Bridge, possibly endangering a portion of this year’s Amgen Tour of California but Caltrans tells Amgen Tour of California race organizers that repairs should be complete in time for the May bicycle race. Stage 5 from Seaside to Paso Robles will pass along this stretch of Highway 1 through Big Sur.
