Betabrand commuter apparel 2015

You might know Betabrand for their fleece “dress slacks” and YouTube ads for their awesomely obnoxious disco pants, but did you know this San Francisco clothing manufacturer has been selling practical urban cycling apparel since at least 2010? A woman’s cycling pant was added in 2012, and they’ve continued to expand their women’s bike-to-work clothing through 2015.

They have jeans, slacks, skirts, a shirt dress, shoes, socks and scarves. View and buy the complete collection here.

Annie Cohen Kopchovsky biked around the world

March is Women’s History Month, when bike bloggers quote Susan B. Anthony ( bicycling “has done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world”) and temperance reformer Frances Willard, who used bicycling as a metaphor for control over her destiny.

Their achievements are notable, but let’s talk about the first woman to wheel her bicycle around the world: 24-year-old Annie Cohen Kopchovsky who changed her name to Annie Londonderry in a wager to show that women are capable of anything a man can do.

Cycling Cairo women overcome cultural prejudices

Yasmine Mahmoud female cyclist in Egypt

Haitham El-Tabei wrote about the challenges women face when cycling in Cairo, Egypt. He notes that women enjoy more freedom in Egypt than in some neighboring countries, but they still must endure sexual harassment and violence in a culture that considers it inappropriate for women to ride bikes.

31 year old Yasmine Mahmoud rides her bike to work after carrying it to street level from her 10th floor apartment. As a member of Go Bike in Cairo, she helps encourage other women to try going anywhere and everywhere on a bicycle.
