Our team has lined up discounts and giveaways on sporting goods, clothing, household items, plus coffee and tasty treats atbike-friendly shops from San Mateo to San Jose.
Yesterday’s “Queen Stage” of the Amgen Tour of California 2014 took racers over the tops of two significant climbs — Mount Hamilton near San Jose and Mount Diablo near Danville — with nearly 11,000 feet of climbing over 109 miles in 90 degree heat.
I’m old and slow and persistent, taking nearly 2½ hours to reach the KOM point by Lick Observatory at the summit of Mount Hamilton yesterday. During my time on Mount Hamilton Road, the first group to pass me was the Chris Carmichael ride, in which a group of cyclists ride every stage of the Amgen Tour of California in the early morning before the race begins. I chatted with Paul Ruggiero of Santa Ynez and Karen Wilkinson of Seattle for a bit before I dropped back.
Stronger and faster club riders can do this climb in about 90 minutes, and scores of them passed me as I approached the summit.
Canadian Will Routley racing for Optum Pro Cycling p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies crossed the KOM line on Mount Hamilton after little more than an hour motoring up Mount Hamilton Road.

Primary elections take place June 3, 2014 in California. Several cities will also select candidates for city council on this date. I Walk I Bike I Vote is a guide for San Jose voters who believe San Jose can and should be a safer city. So far, candidates Timothy Harrison, Madison Nguyen, Bob Levy, Richard McCoy, Don Gagliardi, Buu Thai, Don Rocha, and Lois Wilco-Owns have sent in their answers.

Click through to I Walk I Bike I Vote to read their responses. I’m particularly impressed with District 3 candidate Don Gagliardi’s responses.
Today was the 100th day on the job for Ms. Nuria Fernandez, the newly appointed General Manager for the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA). For Bike to Work Day on Thursday, May 8, she joined a 30-strong VTA bike convoy from downtown San Jose to the VTA headquarters facility on North First Street. You can also see Santa Clara County Supervisor Ken Yeager behind and to her left (your right).

As of Tuesday night when I’m typing this, our weather prognosticators give us a vague chance of light rain for the evening of Bike To Work Day.
The morning should be pleasant, but be prepared for possible dampness as a weak cold front moves through the entire Bay Area beginning about late morning.
