Guadalupe River Trail Phase 1 Construction between I-880 and Trimble Road begins this week.
Olympic medalist and cycling Hall of Famer Nelson Vails will visit San Jose Hellyer Velodrome on the afternoon of Wednesday, July 11 2012 from 1 to 4 PM as part of the Junior Racing Foundation Sister City Challenge. He’ll also be in Oakland that evening at a time and location TBD.
Program challenges Oakland youth to take up track cycling.
In 2012, the Junior Racing Foundation will encourage high school aged Youth in Oakland, CA and Fukuoka, Japan by hosting the Sister City Summer Bicycle Velodrome Racing Challenge.
The program will be held in the Hellyer Velodrome (San Jose, CA) and Kurume City Keirin Stadium (Fukuoka, Japan) from June 20th to August 22nd 2012. 1984 Olympic Silver medalist Nelson Vails, 2012 PanAm triple medalist Beth Newell and other former professional and Olympic medalist will be guest motivational speakers.
“Coming from Harlem to Olympic Silver through a youth program I see the need for Junior Racing Foundation and support it,” says Nelson Vails. Vails grew up in the streets of Harlem, New York and leveraged his skills as a New York City bike messenger to professional fame and an Olympic Silver Medal in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. Vails also made in appearance in the movie “Quicksilver.”
The fifth annual SubZERO “street meets geek” DIY art festival takes place Friday night, June 1 2012 from 6 PM to midnight in San Jose SoFA (South of First Area). Expect to see a lot of bikes and art bikes and other bike geekery there from participants as well as from a number of featured vendors.
