Santa Cruz hit-and-run cyclist fatality

The Sentinel reports a 65-year-old man lost his life after he crashed on his bicycle on Soquel Drive last Friday night and was subsequently run over by a Mazda.

The driver of the Mazda fled the scene. Authorities are searching for a “dark” Mazda sedan with a missing hubcap.

Pedestrian killed by cyclist in San Jose, and more bike news

Mercury News journalist Mike Rosenberg tweeted out this letter sent to City Hall the other day regarding pedestrian safety and dangerous sidewalk cyclists in downtown San Jose.

Santa Cruz County Highway 9 cyclist fatality

I was out most of yesterday and missed this sad bit of news from Felton in Santa Cruz County. According to the Santa Cruz Sentinel, a 50 year old man riding for the first time with a cycling group suffered an unspecified medical emergency on Highway 9 and lost his life.

Teen fatality last night marks 40th traffic death for San Jose

A 17 year old boy was killed last night while crossing a large intersection in south San Jose with his bicycle. The driver of the silver Toyota RAV-4 stayed on the scene, according to media reports.

Midweek carnage

As I type this, CHP have closed both lanes of northbound Highway 17 in Santa Cruz County, California. Somebody drove his vehicle off of the side of the highway and down the side of the mountain. Two women were ejected from the vehicle, and the car landed on top of one of the ejected passengers. Responding CHP requested a tow vehicle with 200 feet of cable to recover the vehicle.
