Dramatic helmet cam footage

Helmet cam footage from a London cyclist has gone viral. Not sure what the homeless man in this video or his friends and family think of his quick fame, but why not post examples of good deeds?

I think all of us have probably bought stuff for a random homeless person on the street, and the reaction of this man in London is fairly typical in my experience. San Francisco bums are a class unto themselves, though — I’ve had them refuse my offer of, say, a cheap snack from Carl Jr and ask for a $7 panini with a $4 cup of coffee from Starbucks instead.

Santa Cruz transportation commission survey

Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission seeks community input regarding the county long range transportation plan. You can take this short survey here.

Goals 1D and 1E may conflict directly with Goal 1F in the plan, in my opinion. Goals 1D and 1E mostly seem to be about improveing the driving experience for motorists, while the Commission says they’d like to “increase the number of people walking, biking, taking transit, and carpooling” in Goal 1F. If driving is easy and cheap, why would anybody bother with the bus or carpooling?

You have until May 9 to complete the survey. Read here for background on the Santa Cruz County regional transportation plan.

D.C. Emancipation Day

Happy Emancipation Day, everybody. For U.S. residents, that’s the reason tax returns are due on Tuesday instead of today. The IRS deferred the tax return deadline in deference to this holiday, which marks the anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s signing of the Compensated Emancipation Act on April 16, 1862. This law ended slavery in D.C., which paid slave owners for the release of their slaves.

I feel dirty just typing that phrase: release their slaves.

Thanks to the numerous folks who responded on Twitter to my inquiry about this, with a nod to Darren on the details.
