Cyclist Melanie Spigelmyre was attacked by a road raging steer as she cycled through a herd of free range cattle in Fresno, California yesterday. Although she escaped relatively unscathed, her bike was seriously damaged. A photographer managed to snap a photo of Spigelmyre just as the bull charged her on her bike.

Talking heads frequently talk up grand visions of people happily traveling by bike accompanied by colorful visualizations which bike bloggers like me happily repeat. More often than not, the dream fades as it collides headlong with political and economic reality.

A 64 year old man riding his bicycle on a trail in Berks County, Pennsylvania was attacked and knocked to the ground by a group of teens. The cyclist drew his gun and shot two of the teens, sending one of them to the hospital and the other to the morgue. After questioning, police released the cyclist and arrested a third teen who was not shot.

James Thomas of Bicycle Design has started a “#VeloThursday” theme at Google Plus, where people post their bike themed photos to Google’s social media page.
I’ve posted a handful so far, including this one from the 2009 Amgen Tour of California in Winters California during the Davis to Santa Rosa stage. I did this back when tilt-shift was the gimmicky fad of the day.
