Summary of this article: 35 year old cyclist rides eastbound on Macarthur Boulevard in East Oakland when a 42 year old motorist opened her door directly into the cyclist, knocking the cyclist in the path of an AC Transit Line NX bus.
A confluence of bad timing ends up in another death. And it sucks all the way around. Sorry for the cyclist's family.
A similar sequence of events happened to Clinton Miceli in Chicago in 2008. Here's a photo of his Ghost Bike.
…extremely sad…oakland's gotta be a hard town to cycle in even on the best of days…
Motorist charged with anything? It's a crime to open your door into oncoming traffic…
From the KTVU article: “Police said they will take their evidence to the district attorney. It will be up to prosecutors to determine if the woman who opened the door will face charges. Police said it is illegal to open a door in an unsafe manner. In this case, prosecutors could pursue involuntary manslaughter charges because the victim was fatally injured.”
You also have to love the bit where the driver went to get her hair done after she killed the cyclist.
