Year: 2011

Stage 2 Tour start moved to Nevada City

Due to continued inclement weather in the Sierra Mountains, the second stage start for the 2011 Amgen Tour of California has been moved from Squaw Valley to Nevada City.

Riders will begin the race at 12:15 and race 61 miles to Sacramento, where they will complete three circuit laps before finishing in front of the Capital Dome sometime after about 3:30 PM.

Nevada City hosted the first stage last year and local organizers were able to mobilize quickly to accommodate the change in plans.

Snow Day?

Snow is falling at Lake Tahoe right now, with significant snow expected overnight and through the day on Sunday. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Advisory for the area. Amgen Tour of California organizer AEG Sports issued a statement tonight regarding the weather:

The 2011 Amgen Tour of California is scheduled to kick off Sunday, May 15, in South Lake Tahoe at 10:30 a.m. PT. As everyone is aware, there is a storm front predicted to reach the area. Therefore race organizers, in conjunction with the commissaires, teams and public safety organizations, have developed a number of contingency plans with the safety of the riders and fans being the number one priority. The weather is constantly changing in the Sierras, and our team will be assessing weather conditions throughout the morning. A decision on any changes to the route and timing will be made at 9 a.m. PT tomorrow, and will ultimately be based on what is best and most safe for our riders and spectators.
