Updates on top sellers: mobile apps and streaming video

Quick note to SF Bay Area: The atmospheric river of moisture that inundated the Pacific Northwest on Monday arrives here Thursday, with up to two inches of rain forecast for the North Bay, and 1/2″ to an inch around the Bay and into Santa Cruz along with gusty winds. As always, you can check South Bay Trail status here.


A few of you have noticed that I track top-selling bicycle products in various categories as reported by Amazon.com. These lists showing bikes, accessories, books, and so forth are updated weekly. I recently added streaming video and mobile apps to this tracking utility.

Lower ridership on Highway 17 Express Bus

The Highway 17 bus between Santa Cruz and San Jose CA is a mode of transportation near and dear to my heart. It’s the daily ride “over the hill” for myself and hundreds of others for work, school and outings. Santa Cruz Metro, which operates this bus service, increased one-way and roundtrip fares 40%, and the price of 31-day passes shot up 30% effective September 10, 2015. Just released ridership numbers show fewer passengers use the Highway 17 bus on a daily basis.

America’s first long-term transpo funding since 2005

The United States Congress forwarded the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act, or the FAST Act, to the White House last night, with President Obama expected to sign the bill into law just as the current highway authorization bill expires today. The FAST Act authorizes five years of funding for American highway and other transportation projects and is America’s first long term transportation funding law since SAFETEA-LU was signed into law by President George W Bush in 2005. Federal transportation policy since then has limped along with a series of continuing resolutions and the short term MAP-21 legislation, hindering long term planning.
