Cyclist killed in Fremont

David Martinez “collided with a car” (says the Fremont Patch in a lovely exception to the usual passive voice in crash journalism, along with the usual victim blaming in the reader comments) early Monday morning on Paseo Padre Parkway in Fremont, CA. According to news reports, Martinez was pronounced at the scene after rescuers failed to revive him. My condolences to those close to Martinez.

Apparently nobody besides the driver witnessed this crash since the police are asking for information regarding it. No doubt another SWSS.

I saw mention of this on Twitter shortly after it happened then forgot to post about it later.

H/T to Kristen. I biked up Niles Canyon Road from Fremont this morning. There seem to be many motorists there who equate “share the road” with “buzz by within inches of that cyclist.” I had to be a lot more assertive in my lane positioning than usual.

Sidewalk cyclist bites the dust

Update: I forgot to embed the video earlier! It’s now here.

Act 1, Scene 1: A green bike lane busy with cyclists, including a pair of lycra-clad speed daemons on their spendy carbon fiber racing bikes.

Enter Fred dressed in normal clothes and riding his heavy cruiser bike much faster than those racer poseurs. Instead of slowing until it’s safe to pass (heaven forbid!), he tries to impress the pretty girl by veering to the right and jumping up onto the sidewalk.

San Francisco cyclist doored, injured by passing bus

Passive language (“the car door opened” of its own accord) is typical in collision news reports like this, but the cyclists swerving into the bus adds an interesting passive / aggressive touch.

A bicyclist was injured in a collision with a San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency bus Saturday after swerving to miss a car door that opened on Geary Street downtown.

More in CBS SF: Cyclist Swerves, Hits Muni Bus In Downtown San Francisco. Opening a door into the path of a cyclist is illegal in all 50 states, but there’s no word on if the mysterious self-opening door was cited.

Burry Stander RIP

25 year old South African mountain bike champion Burry Stander was hit by a taxi in Shelly Beach, South Africa and killed earlier today while he was on a training ride.

Stander was UCI Mountain Bike World Cup under-23 men’s cross-country 2009 world champion.

Stander leaves behind his wife Cherise Taylor Stander, who is also an elite cyclist. With condolences to those close to him and the mountain bike community he was a part of.
