Flywheel bike on Science Friday

Maxwell von Stein and his flywheel bicycle made it to Science Friday.

Props to Murali. The people behind the usual suspects (e.g. Bike Hugger and Bicycle Design) and I all saw von Stein’s flywheel bike design re-posted at all of the various design blogs, but we independently decided there wasn’t anything new here. Props to von Stein, though, for using this to draw some attention to his job hunt — it’s a great project in that regard. I love that he’s using a NuVinci 360 hub in this as well.

California town removes bike ban

This “no bicycles in street” sign on Fernleaf Avenue in Newport Beach, CA community of Corona del Mar illegally directs bike riders to walk their bikes on the adjacent sidewalk. Update: After action by local cyclists, the city said they’ll remove the sign and replace it with a warning.

Rim mounted bicycle light

Okay, this Revolight persistence of vision rim mounted bicycle light is groovy.

A tube of LEDs is clipped to the inside of each bicycle rim, with power from a battery packed near the hub and synchronization through a fork mounted magnet.

According to Revolight’s Kickstarter page, MSRP will be $220. A similar POV bicycle wheel light, Dan Goldwater’s Monkey Lectric, retails for $65.

How to drive while using two cell phones

David Secker of Norwich, England was cited for driving 70 MPH while talking on one phone and texting with another. He reportedly used his knees to steer, though his lawyer denies that was the case. Police say Secker made them wait to complete his call after they pulled him over.

The judge hearing Secker’s case fined him £150, assessed 14 points against his license, and banned him from driving for 12 months.
