Sacramento: North American Handmade Bicycle Show coming Real Soon Now

NAHBS 2016

Reminder: The 2016 North American Handmade Bicycle Show takes place February 26 – 28 at the Sacramento Convention Center. I’ll be there either Friday or Saturday (or maybe both days), mostly covering Santa Cruz framebuilders but I’ll check everybody out.

If you like bikes and people associated with bikes, I recommend attending if you can. Advance purchase adult day pass is $22 and worth the price, and I recommend buying online since the line to purchase tickets on the day of typically wraps around the block, especially on Saturday.

Downtown Sacramento is a lovely place to bike around, especially on the weekends. I recommend the visit if you can make it up.

Camp Pendleton bike access registration now live

For those who need access across US Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton for travel between Orange County and San Diego County California, online registration is now open. Registration and a U.S. state-issued ID will be required for non-military personnel who bike through Camp Pendleton beginning March 1.

Caltrans District 11 also announced I-5 shoulders are open to cyclists between Oceanside Harbor Dr. and Las Pulgas Rd. in both directions for cyclists who are not able to access Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton.

San Jose Airport closes Ewert Road for Super Bowl 50

This sign announcing a closure for Ewert Road in San Jose, CA surprised me this morning. As far as I’m aware, there has been no announcement of this road closure. Ewert is a vitally important connector for cyclists traveling east and west. The immediately adjacent U.S. Highway 101, a limited access highway which provides the same east-west access to motorists, remains open to motorists this week.

This is unexpected. No bike or ped access on Ewert Road 2/3 thru 2/10 #sb50 #sanjose @bikesiliconvalley

Targeted stop sign enforcement for cyclists?

I’m reading the minutes for the Santa Cruz County, California Community Traffic Safety Coalition (CTSC) and see the comment from the person who represents pedestrian advocacy in Santa Cruz regarding cyclists who roll stop signs.

CTSC - targeted stop sign enforcement cyclists

People on bikes should follow the rules of the road, but are scofflaw cyclists enough of a problem to warrant targeted enforcement efforts above and beyond what local police don’t do for motorists? Let’s look at the evidence, shall we?
