Yolo County bicycle hit & run ends with police dog takedown

Update: Sac Bee reports 38-year-old driver Alamar Houston will be charged with two counts of attempted murder, three counts of assault with a deadly weapon, and felony driving under the influence of drugs. Two 17-year-old cyclists were seriously injured, one of them critically. 51-year-old Donald Dumaine (whose story is recounted below) suffered road rash when Houston allegedly pushed him from the road. Alamar Cyril Houston has a record, with multiple arrests in Glenn, Yolo and Sacramento Counties for petty theft, receiving stolen property, burglary, trespassing and failure to appear.


Several news outlets reported yesterday’s police chase after a hit-and-run versus three cyclists that ended with a police dog takedown of the suspect in Sacramento, California, but there’s much more to this story.

Caltrans report debuts active transportation performance

Caltrans publishes a quarterly performance report they call Mile Marker. For the June 2015 edition, the California transportation agency debuted new performance measures, including data on use of active transportation, on-time intercity rail trips, as well as cyclist and pedestrian fatality rates. They also highlighted a the successful implementation of a road diet project for downtown Redding, California. The cover features people biking and walking across the Sacramento River on the Sundial Bridge in Redding.

Boris wants bikes off the road, TfL says “Not yet”

For those people who ride bikes, London Mayor Boris Johnson reportedly wants to make some bicycle facility use mandatory where available, according to ITV news. Transport for London (TfL) responded to multiple media requests for comment, saying they have no plans to mandate cyclist use of London’s bicycle superhighways.

Google’s bike vision for Silicon Valley

A vision for Silicon Valley as a bicycle Shangri La

Nine percent of employees who work at Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, California currently bike to work. Google co-founder Sergey Brin has reportedly told shareholders that he is “annoyed” at having to pay $40,000 for each parking space. To that end, his company’s transportation planners have set a goal of 20% bicycle mode share for commuters.

To achieve that goal, the bicycling landscape must change dramatically throughout north Santa Clara County. The Bike Vision Plan outlines how Google believes this can happen.

Santa Clara County bike plan update

Silicon Valley Cyclist: You can be involved in bicycle advocacy!

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Agency (VTA) in California will begin updating their County Bicycle Plan this month at the BPAC meeting scheduled for the evening of Wednesday, June 10, 2015. The Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee encourages the public to attend next Wednesday’s workshop to discuss the bike plan and the county road department plans to expand expressways.
