Bike bursts into flames

A cyclist narrowly escaped serious injury after coming off his bike on the Heidelberg-Kinglake Road on Sunday night. Police Sgt Steve Love said the man was believed to have lost control of the bike after hitting gravel on the road verge at 6:30 PM. The bike then hit another vehicle and burst into flames.

Bad customer service on bike purchase at Toys R Us

I’m shocked at this bike purchase experience reported at Consumerist:

My husband and I bought a child’s bike on November 24, 2012 and paid the $10 fee to have it assembled. We were told that it should be ready in about 48 hours and that we would receive a call when ready. My husband spent at least 25 minutes selecting the perfect bike as well as a helmet.

John Pickens RIP

ARPANET architect John Pickens who worked for Cisco as a distinguished engineer killed while road cycling on Niles Canyon Road north of Fremont, California.

I can’t tell from the news report if this is a SWSS or an honest-to-goodness solo crash.

Condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.

We also lost a road cyclist in south Santa Cruz County near San Andreas Road Saturday morning. In this case, police report the cyclist apparently suffered a “medical condition.”

Bike ban hearings at Colorado Supreme Court

Colorado cycling advocates seek to overturn cycling ban in Black Hawk.

The gambling town of Black Hawk, CO banned bikes in January 2010. A trio of cyclists rode through town on purpose to test the law. Nearly three years later, the Colorado Supreme Court began hearing arguments on Thursday on the gambling town’s bike ban.
