Poll: The law and reflective clothing

In a recent mailing list discussion, somebody proposed a law in which reflective or high visibility clothing for cyclists should be mandatory.

As far as I know, New Hampshire is the only state with this requirement — NH RSA 265:144Special Rules for Bicycles” states, in part, “A bicyclist shall wear at least one item of reflective outerwear apparel, such as a reflective vest, jacket, or helmet strip, during the period from 1/2 hour after sunset to 1/2 hour before sunrise.

Earphones Connected to More Injuries and Deaths

That headline is the claim of an automotive group in this Fox News DC story. The American Automobile Association says pedestrian injuries and deaths are increasing because people wearing earphones are not aware of their surroundings. I’d personally be interested in knowing the real crash data on this. (more…)

Mississippi passes 3 foot passing law

Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour signed SB 3014 — “The John Paul Frerer Bicycle Safety Act” — this week. This “Bicycle Safety Law” includes a “three foot” passing requirement and other important changes to Mississippi law. Mississippi also joins the 41 states with discriminatory “Far to the Right” laws on the books. (more…)

Stupid motorist tricks

There’s the one stupid motorist move that’s immediately obvious in this video, where the sociopath idiot driving the SUV in a parking lot crosses the double yellow to pass as I’m signalling a left turn, just so he can save himself three or four seconds. He gave an apologetic wave as he passed while I yelled a few helpful suggestions about his driving skills. (32 second video) (more…)
