As urban cycling expands by leaps and bounds, how is bicycle culture changing? 81 year old New York Times style photographer Bill Cunningham gets around his city by bike. Filmmaker Richard Press and producer Philip Gefter followed Cunningham to create “Bill Cunningham New York,” an 88 minute documentary that will show at the San Francisco International Film Festival that began April 22 and continues through May 6. Cunningham will appear at the movie showing at the Kabuki this weekend on May 2.

Whenever they can, together or separately, cycling photographers Stan Engelbrecht (Cape Town, South Africa) and Nic Grobler (Johannesburg, South Africa) look for people who use bicycles as part of their everyday work and transportation for their Bicycle Portraits project.
They’re finding out who rides bicycles, why they ride bicycles, if and why they love their bicycles, and of course why so few South Africans choose bicycles as a transport option.
Engelbrecht and Grobler plan to publish a full cover hardcover book of their cyclist photos, but for now you can view their photos and interviews at their Bicycle Portraits website. Click through on the photos to read the stories behind the people and their bikes, like Hendrik Moikanyang’s:
I use the bicycle for transport. I’ve been cycling for 4 years, this bike I bought from Linden cycles. The one I had before was a road bike as well, but it was a bit heavy. I’m traveling from Parkwood to Soweto, takes an hour an 30 minutes. The road is pretty good but the people sometimes bump you unnecessarily.
