Florida mandatory bike lane law

Florida cyclists are asking you to call the office of Governor Charlie Crist now to veto the Highway Safety & Motor Vehicles bill, which adds a mandatory bike lane provision to Florida law. If this law is enacted, Florida will join six other states with discriminatory bike lane laws that require bike lane use by cyclists (with the standard exemptions).

Read the details here, and good luck Florida.

The Highway Safety & Motor Vehicles bill is an omnibus 81 page bill that rewrites big sections of Florida statute related to motor vehicle regulations. Just the introduction that provides an overview of the changes runs to nearly nine pages. The Florida legislature acted with blinding speed on this one — it first went to committee on March 17, and the house and senate both passed this bill with unanimous votes at the end of April.

There is no bike caucus in the Florida legislature, and this stuff can be hard to catch with the typically small volunteer staffs used by almost all local bike advocacy groups.

Manila Bike Party

The Firefly Brigade in Manila organized the 12th Annual Tour of Fireflies, a popular event advocating the use of the bicycle as an alternative means of transportation, in Manila April 18, 2010. This year’s theme, I Vote to Bike, hopes to remind the right of people to clean air and healthier, greener, sustainable communities, with nearly 10,000 cyclists stretched out in an eight kilometer long peloton on the ride route.

Firefly Brigade’ is a Philippines citizen’s action group formed in 1999 to work for clean air and a habitable, people-friendly environment in our cities. “The fireflies have fled the city,” says their website, “because they could not stand its dirty air. All of us cyclists, pedestrians, commuters, even those who ride cars who live, work and raise families in the city may suffer the same fate. We continue to dirty our city’s air with polluting vehicles and factories. As a result, we also risk disappearing like the fireflies. Why resign ourselves to this fate? We have a choice. We can fight for clean air and bring the fireflies back.

Bikes = Economic Catastrophe

Will the US DOT recent policy change giving equal weight for multiple transportation modes result in ‘economic catastrophe’?

US Transportation Secretary Ray Lahood’s March 15 policy announcement favoring bicycle transportation received a lot of favorable press from bike wonks like you and I. The National Association of Manufacturers fears the impact this policy could have on “the efficient movement of freight.” (more…)
